Below are some websites that I find enjoyable, inspiring, and/or helpful. Lately I’ve met some cool people who have travel blogs of their own, and I’ve added them on here.
Very helpful site dealing with all things global. It includes a travel-related forum called the Thorntree. I’ve been a member since I was 17, and It’s a really great way to get inspired by the stories of others, to get advice, to meet fellow wanderers, etc. Probably the best online resource a traveler can get.
This dude quit his career and became a professional nomad, and is totally self-sufficient through his blog. The site has lots of stories, travel tips, etc. Definitely worth checking out.
A blog started by Joel Runyon that discusses people doing… impossible things. It’s one of those sites that makes you feel like shit for reading it at home drinking beer in your bed in your underwear, which is exactly what I’m doing as I type this.
This guy, weirdly, had a large effect on my choosing to go travel. I was toying with the idea of walking across the US (ala “Forrest Gump”) and stumbled upon Nate’s blog in the research process. He’s just a normal kid who felt like walking. I applaud him and his determination. Check out his blog to see where he’s at in the USA!
Some of the best internet writers out there. I’ve been a huge fan of the Onion since I was a kid, and I’ve spent countless hours plagiarizing their stories and passing them off as my own in conversational settings.
Second-best comedy site on the internet (next to The Onion). My little brother Tommy has been published on Cracked!
Stay with and get to know strangers from around the world for free. It’s a beautiful thing.
I met this guy when I went hiking near Bend, Oregon with my Dad and Brother. We camped on a jetty overlooking an alpine lake, I got naked and caught trout on a fly rod; the most beautiful and colorful trout I’ve ever seen. It was one of the best nights of my life. We camped on the jetty, and John camped on an island in the middle of the lake. It was a memorable nights for me and my Dad, but for John, it was just another day in the life. Why? Because this fucking guy was four months in to hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, from Mexico to Canada. Incredible. Read about his adventures. Top guy.
Met Rob on a hot August night in Las Vegas, Nevada. The next day, we were in the middle of the desert, forty miles out of town, blowing 12 gauge buckshot rounds from my pistol-grip shotgun into the Nevada sky. Very memorable experience. Him and Richard, his traveling buddy, will be starting there Europe trip in September, and I’m hoping to join up with them for a bit. Top men.
Met this American in Belgrade, Serbia. His blog offers fantastic advice for anyone who wishes to spend his/her entire life traveling the world. It’s easier than you may think….
Met this couple at a laundromat in Budapest, Hungary. They are riding their bicycles from Bremen, Germany to Malaysia. That’s right. Malaysia.
